They are met by their stepmother, whom the older sister, Su-mi, ignores, and the younger, Su-yeon, is afraid of. She becomes frantic when Su-mi tells her the very first night that someone is in her room. The sisters feel that the new circumstances are conspiring against them, especially the younger sister, who is continually mistreated and humiliated by the stepmother. Their father refuses to acknowledge that his wife could be capable of meanness, what’s more, he is becoming increasingly concerned for Su-mi’s mental health; he keeps trying to make her understand that Su-yeon is dead.
